I have learned how possible it is to put immense amounts of time into a project and yield results with little to no value. Just because someone is busy working, it does not mean that the work they do will accomplish something of value.
It’s all about perspective. What someone values determines whether or not they see certain work as a success, or a waste of time. If someone does not believe that the goal of a project is worth accomplishing, why would it matter if that project was completed perfectly? It is entirely possible, and even common, for people to effectively carry out the tasks of a project with an overall goal that is off-target.
In an industry that delivers a specific service to customers, it is important to remember that the amount of value a service adds to a customer’s business is a far greater metric by which to measure a project than the amount of time spent or revenue earned from the project.
Not that time and revenue do not matter, but the purpose of an advisory service is to enhance and add to the value of a business instead of looking to make a killing on a commission.
I was once told by a professor, “If you get into an industry just for the money, you will probably hate your job. So, find something you love, something you value, and find a way to make money doing it.”
