My First Real Vacation in Five Years! by Louise Toothman

I was so excited to be going on vacation this year. It would be my first real vacation in 5 years!
(Previous years vacation days were taken for sick children, medical reason, trips to the vet, etc)
This year I was going to be able to actually take 5 days in a row for myself….yippee!!
I get up on my first day of vacation and look outside at my yard. My yard equipment has been down and now my yard resembles a jungle! I decide this would be a great time to look at the mower and see if I could get it to run. I go to get my tools and, low and behold, half of them are missing! (I still have one son at home.) I gather up what tools I can find and head out to be the mower repairperson. I don’t have the ratchet for my sockets so I get to use a flat head screw driver shoved in the end of the socket for a ratchet…I truly love my son! After sitting in the shade (it had to have been 100 degrees that day) and replacing the fuel line, cleaning the carburetor and putting it back together, tada…the mower is running again! (By now it is 200 degrees in the shade and too hot to mow). I am on vacation anyway; let’s get that son of mine to mow!
Day two of my vacation I decided to work on my big wheel trimmer that will not start. After taking the carburetor off and cleaning it, putting it back on, it still will not start. (It’s another 100 degree day in the shade.) So I take the carburetor back off and clean it again, check the needle and float, all seems to be working, so I put it back together and tada….the trimmer starts. As you can guess it is now 200 degrees in the shade and too hot to trim. It’s time to get my son and show him how to use the big wheel trimmer! After all this is my vacation!
Day three of my vacation the hand-held trimmer will not start. I am not working on another blasted thing, I am on vacation. This trimmer is going to the repair shop first thing Monday. So instead I get to take my son to fill out job applications…great vacation so far….NOT!
Day four of my vacation my sister is going for an MRI and of course I can’t let her go alone so I drive her to the doctor. I have never seen so much road construction in my life! I am starting to not like vacation!
Day five of my vacation I get to drive my son to town to pick up his paycheck that he has been waiting on for two weeks. This may not seem like a big deal but it was over a 100 mile trip to get a sixty dollar check! (I told him not to take that job!)
Now my vacation is over and, as I set back and reflect on that week, I have decided that I don’t think I will be taking a vacation next year - it’s too hard on me!
Anyone else have any vacations stories to share?
