The speaker for the Eastern Oklahoma MGMA meeting in October was Shari Moore, Vice-President of Risk Management for PILCO. Mrs. Moore is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and has spent many years helping healthcare providers evaluate and mitigate risk.
The topic for her presentation was the Emerging Risks of the Electronic Medical Record. She shared that as providers have implemented EMR software solutions over the past ten years there have been many issues and in some cases legal action associated with how EMR is setup and used.
In most cases, these issues were the result of either poorly designed solutions, poorly implemented solutions, the misuse of the system or misinterpretation of the system and/or data in the system. Here are a few suggestions to help you avoid the same issues for your implementation of a new EMR.
Plan before you purchase software
Document all of your processes
Include all front line clinicians
