At the August meeting of the MGMA Tulsa Chapter, the topic of discussion was social media and how it effects employers in healthcare. The speaker was Carrie
L. Palmer, J.D. of the Resolution Legal Group.
She covered how to address policies with employees in regards to the use of social media. Such as, if to allow employees to access their social media at work, directing employees on what work related information can be discussed on social media and even who owns the data on an employee’s device or social media account.
Additionally, she discussed BYOD (Bring your Own Device) policies and trends. Meaning, what are the legal distinctions between employer supplied devices and employee supplied devices What resonated with me was that the use of social media by employees in the work place must have clearly stated policies. If not, it could cause everything from breaches in network security to HIPAA violations.
